穗花棋盤腳    玉蕊科

學名：Barringtonia racemosa (L.) B1. & DC.

別名：細葉棋盤腳、水茄苳

產地：印度、錫蘭、東南亞、太平洋諸島；台
灣基隆，恆春海岸。

性狀：常綠喬木。葉光滑，波狀或牙齒緣，漸
尖頭，基部心形，幾無柄。總狀花序，懸垂於
近枝端葉腋；花乳白色，雄蕊紅色。果實卵
圓形，長 5-7 cm 具四稜，外果皮暗紅色，中果
皮富纖維質，可隨海水漂浮。

用途：庭園景觀、海岸防風。

Small-leaf barringtonia    Lecythidaceae

Native to Taiwan.

An evergreen tree. Leaves glavrous, margin undulate
or dentate, acuminate at apex, cordate at base,
subsessile. Inflorescence a panicle pendent at the
front of twigs, axillary; flowers opalescent; stamens
red. Fruit ovate-orbicular, 4-ridged, pericarp dark
red, mesocarp fibrous, dispersed by floating.

An ornamental and avenue tree, also used for
windbreak along the coast.
